ANA (All Nippon Airways) has confirmed that up to 113 domestic flights will be canceled between July 6 and 12, to allow them enough asset flexibility to round up repairs on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
ANA has confirmed that the flight cancellations are expected to affect around 21,000 travelers.
his is not the first time the airline has had to cancel flights over the Trent 1000 engine problems. In 2016, it had to overhaul the entire fleet of Trent 1000 engines.
Rolls-Royce had set up a response unit to deal with the engine issues, but it is clear the problems are not going anywhere just yet.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE TRENT 1000?
The engines are suffering from excessive corrosion while they operate, reducing their life expectancy and overall performance.
Back in 2016 Rolls-Royce said that the issues with the engines were made worse by ANA’s “intensive” use of the aircraft.
A report found that the Dreamliner’s engine, on short-haul routes, were exposed to higher temperatures, causing the corrosion in the fan blades to increase, as compared to on longer flights.
Several airlines around the world, such as Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and Air New Zealand, have all been stricken by the continuing problems the engines are facing, forcing them to ground their fleet.
However, with ANA’s decision to cancel its flights, it is the first time that over 100 routes have been canceled due to the engine’s woes.
Currently, European airlines have changed their flight paths to deal with the issue after a ruling from the FAA that stated that the airlines must flight within 60 – 120 minutes of an airport during flight as the risk of an engine experiencing problems was likely.
Despite the changes, Rolls-Royce made in 2016, and even with a fleet engine overhaul, it is clear that the issues of the Trent 1000 are going to continue to affect airlines for the foreseeable future.
