July 04, 20018

ANA (All Nippon Airways) has confirmed that up to 113 domestic flights will be canceled between July 6 and 12, to allow them enough asset flexibility to round up repairs on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

ANA has confirmed that the flight cancellations are expected to affect around 21,000 travelers.

his is not the first time the airline has had to cancel flights over the Trent 1000 engine problems. In 2016, it had to overhaul the entire fleet of Trent 1000 engines.

Rolls-Royce had set up a response unit to deal with the engine issues, but it is clear the problems are not going anywhere just yet.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE TRENT 1000?

The engines are suffering from excessive corrosion while they operate, reducing their life expectancy and overall performance.

Back in 2016 Rolls-Royce said that the issues with the engines were made worse by ANA’s “intensive” use of the aircraft.

A report found that the Dreamliner’s engine, on short-haul routes, were exposed to higher temperatures, causing the corrosion in the fan blades to increase, as compared to on longer flights.

Several airlines around the world, such as Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and Air New Zealand, have all been stricken by the continuing problems the engines are facing, forcing them to ground their fleet.

However, with ANA’s decision to cancel its flights, it is the first time that over 100 routes have been canceled due to the engine’s woes.

Currently, European airlines have changed their flight paths to deal with the issue after a ruling from the FAA that stated that the airlines must flight within 60 – 120 minutes of an airport during flight as the risk of an engine experiencing problems was likely.

Despite the changes, Rolls-Royce made in 2016, and even with a fleet engine overhaul, it is clear that the issues of the Trent 1000 are going to continue to affect airlines for the foreseeable future.

ANA To Cancel 176 More Dreamliner Flights

July 10, 2018

Japanese carrier ANA will be canceling an additional 176 flights from July 13 through to July 22 as the airline will perform further maintenance on the affected Rolls-Royce Engines on its Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

This would be the second cancellation announcement that the Japanese carrier has had to make in less than two months.

The airline, which has been having issues with the Trent 1000 engines since 2016, canceled 113 Dreamliner flights last week, affecting thousands of passengers and causing severe network disruptions.

Many airlines around the world that have also been affected by the Trent 1000 woes have brought in additional leased aircraft to cover the load on the planes that require inspection.

OTHER AFFECTED CARRIERS

Virgin Atlantic, for one, has leased additional A330s to help deal with the 787 disruptions.

Air New Zealand is another carrier that has been struggling with Trent 1000 problems and has had to lease wide-bodies to counteract the cancellations.

It is still unclear whether the affected carriers will be seeking compensation from Rolls-Royce over the engine disruptions.

Even though the loss of revenues, credibility, and operational reliability have been severely affected, there have not been any statements on future actions against the engine manufacturer.

The initial forecast for a comprehensive engine solution is scheduled for 2022. However, should network disruptions continue to cripple the operators, the hostility against Rolls-Royce might increase considerably.
