ROME: Premier Silvio Berlusconi says that Air France-KLM could be a good partner for Alitalia if the Italian carrier were to seek international partnerships.
Berlusconi objected to a takeover bid by Air France-KLM, which has now been withdrawn. But the Italian leader said after a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy that if Alitalia wants to reach bilateral accords, Air France might be a good option.
Berlusconi has said that the loss-making Alitalia must be kept in Italian hands. He has tapped an aide to put together a group of Italian investors but none has so far materialized.
The French president said that "collaboration between Alitalia and Air France is welcome."
Berlusconi and Sarkozy met in Rome on the sidelines of a U.N.-sponsored food summit.
