Acidente de avião no Canadá mata sete pessoas; sobrevivente sai andando

17/11/2008 - 14h43

Mounties guard B.C. seaplane crash site

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 | 7:46 AM ET

CBC News

RCMP officers spent the night at the scene of a weekend seaplane crash
off British Columbia's Sunshine Coast that killed seven of eight people
on board.

Officials with the coroner's office are expected to arrive at the site
on Thormanby Island later Tuesday to remove the remains of the victims
from the wreckage.

RCMP Cpl. Peter Thiessen said officers reached the wooded site Monday.

"There is evidence there that all partner agencies will need to
have...and certainly we have seven souls that require some security,"
said Thiessen.

Family members of one of the victims tried to get to the crash site
Monday, but were turned away by authorities.

The coroner will decide when the bodies are returned to the families,
said Thiessen.

The crash site is less than 30 metres below the top of a mountain in the
southern section of Thormanby Island, he said.

"What we are doing now is to look at the scars on the hillside and the
damage to the aircraft to try and determine what angles and position the
aircraft might have been in when it was entering the trees,"
Transportation Safety Board representative Bill Yearwood said Monday.

Debris from the seaplane is scattered more than 100 metres from the
point of impact, he said.

"There were two fires at the site: one next to one of the engines and
one involved with the fuselage," said Yearwood, who added that the
condition of the wreckage will make the investigation more difficult.

Based on physical evidence, he said it seems that the plane was climbing
when it hit the hill at high speed.

"What we see is consistent with the aircraft climbing at high speed when
it contacted the trees and it's evident that [it] broke apart right on
impact."

The amphibious Grumman Goose aircraft departed from Vancouver
International Airport around 10 a.m. PT Sunday and went down in a wooded
area on Thormanby Island about 20 minutes later, breaking apart and
bursting into flames after the crash.

The pilot and six passengers died. A seventh passenger scrambled out of
the wreckage moments before it exploded and survived.

Police say they will interview the lone survivor -- 35-year-old Tom
Wilson of Edmonton -- who is in hospital recovering.

The plane was carrying construction workers to a remote hydro-electric
project in the Toba Valley being built for Plutonic Power.

Impressionante que uma pessoa tenha sobrevivido.
A foto do ponto de colisão é chocante.
