CAIRO (AFP) – Cairo airport security said they evacuated passengers, including Egyptian Tourism Minister Zuheir Garana, from a Rome-bound plane on Wednesday after receiving a telephone call saying a bomb was on board.
The airport security declared a state of emergency and evacuated the 157 passengers, most of them Italians, from the Alitalia flight.
They were taken to the transit hall and the plane was driven away from the boarding gates.
The phone tip was anonymous, they said.
The passengers were inspected and police were combing luggage and the airplane for explosives.
The plane could be cleared for takeoff within hours if it is found to be safe, they added.
The airport tightened security measures, especially for direct flights to New York, after a Nigerian suspected of ties to Al-Qaeda allegedly tried to blow up a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day.
The measures include multiple checks on luggage and body searches.
The airport is a hub for international flights, with millions of tourists visiting the country each year.
Egypt saw a spate of militant attacks against tourists between 2004 and 2006, which targeted hotels in the Sinai Peninsula.
