A man crashed his car through two security gates and into a parked Arik Air B737-700 (5N-MJJ) at Calabar airport on Wednesday afternoon at 2:45pm. No one was hurt in the incident, but the aircraft was seriously damaged. The driver of the car is arrested. The man, who carried a huge bible and a cross and who claimed that he is Jesus Christ (click to see a picture from another angle), declared that he had made the desperate move to save the aircraft from an impending crash. According to a news report:

The man, whose identity could not be ascertained, boasted in an Akwa Ibom dialect that, “I am launching a war against the ungodly persons in Nigeria, and the war has just started. Until Nigerians give their lives to God the war will not stop. “I am not afraid of anything. Jesus was not afraid. Where is (President Umaru) Yar’Adua? Where is (Cross River State Governor Liyel) Imoke? There he is with his black cap,” shouted the suspect, who appeared to be mentally unstable.

Engineers of Arik Air arrived at the airport for an on-the-spot assessment yesterday. They jacked up the plane in order to remove the car. Passengers were flown to Abuja with another aircraft. The two gates of the Air Force station have partially collapsed.

"who appeared to be mentally unstable" é a melhor parte. Óbvio!

Agora, quem paga o prejú só dos danos do avião? Uma porradinha de um trator num avião já pode custar algumas centenas de milhares de dólares. Fora as outras coisas que este demente detonou no aeroporto + os custos da cia. Põe na conta do Papa?

Arik Air announced that the Boeing 737-700NG aircraft damaged by a taxi on the tarmac of Margaret Ekpo Airport, Calabar on Wednesday will be sent to Germany for thorough investigation.

According to Arik Air Acting Managing Director, Mr. Chris Ndulue, the aircraft, which belly was damaged by the taxi, is back safely at the airline's hangar in Lagos after the Lufthansa Technic engineers had carried out ferry repairs on it in Calabar.

Mr. Ndulue elaborated: "We are now in the process of preparing the aircraft for the longer flight to Germany where Boeing and Lufthansa engineers will carry out a thorough check and repairs to determine the extent of damages. The engineers are expected to carry out a NDT tests on the aircraft and certify the aircraft on completion of the repairs."

He said it was through providence and the high specification of Arik Air's aircraft that the incident was not more serious. On the length of repairs of the aircraft in Germany, Mr. Ndulue said it is expected that the aircraft will be out of service for approximately 30 days.

He thanked all the people that identified with the airline over the incident and called on the Nigerian government to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and equipment at the airports.
