A Japanese magazine, Diamond weekly, revealed the proposal of Japanese Government (by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism/MLIT) on JAL’s restructuring. The report was issued on 12APR10, titled 国交省“国際線撤退”案に楯突いた, JAL「更生計画」骨子の全容
The proposal from the Government was released on 22FEB10, with route restructure/withdrawal based on following:
1) Routes overlapping with ANA
2) Routes being kept due to Alliance partnership, which is necessary
3) Suspending international service entirely from airports with minimal presence
4) Routes with revenue margin above 10% are kept (but cut if contradicts one of above)
The list below is the comparison of JAL’s proposed international route cuts, which was also posted on 03APR10 and Japan’s MLIT proposal. This explains the report planned drastic cuts on International service earlier this year, but turned out to be a “Scaled-down” list later on. The proposal from MLIT, virtually suggests that JAL suspend International routes entirely, was argued by JAL’s new CEO, claiming “a senseless idea demanding JAL to suspend International service”. Thus, MLIT’s proposal was entirely ignored.
