Dec 1 (Reuters) - The Obama administration on Wednesday restored the top aviation safety rating for Mexico, enabling its airlines to establish new routes to the United States.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Mexico's civil aviation system again met minimum international safety standards, and qualified for a Category 1 rating.
The FAA downgraded Mexico in July to a Category 2 designation for suspected shortcomings within its civil aviation authority. The agency was not specific, but downgrades are usually associated with gaps in safety expertise or record keeping or inspection procedures.
Existing service was unaffected by the downgrade, but Mexican carriers were not able to offer new routes or new marketing alliances.
Mexican authorities have said there was no deterioration of flight safety and that the downgrade was due to a shortage of flight inspectors.
The FAA said in a statement on Wednesday that Mexico had made significant progress to achieve compliance necessary for its airlines to operate without restrictions on service to the United States. The FAA said it would provide technical assistance to Mexican safety officials to help ensure a top rating.
U.S. carriers like Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp (AMR.N), offer service to Mexico. AeroMexico and Mexicana fly to U.S. cities. (Reporting by David Morgan; Editing by Peter Cooney)
