Mt Etna in Sicily has erupted sending plumes of ash in the sky, closing the local international airport at Catania-Fontanarosa, Bulgarian media reported on May 12 2011.
According to the Italian national Institute of geophysics and seismology, the latest blast has opened a new crater on the eastern slope of the volcano, which then began to spew lava and volcanic ash, the report said.
Pyroclastic flow for the moment has not been reported to have caused any destruction, although volcanic ash was reported in Catania, and other areas of Sicily. The authorities have since ordered the international airport at Catania- Fontanarosa closed.
Mt Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, close to Messina and Catania. It is the tallest active volcano in Europe, currently standing 3329 metres high, although with eruptions its exact altitude has been varying.
Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity.
