  3. Air Niugini defers four B737 MAX deliveries to at least 2024 24.01.2020 - 06:31 UTC Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) has altered its contract with Boeing to delay delivery of four B737-8s it has on order until at least 2024, the airline’s chief executive, Alan Milne, told Reuters on January 21. The Papua New Guinea carrier had been scheduled to take its first MAX this year, but Milne said the delay would give it more time to complete a broad assessment of its fleeting plans. The fleet review also includes the likely replacement of its Fokker Aircraft. “This will then determine if the MAX is still appropriate for Air Niugini or whether another Boeing product would better suit as a replacement for the B737/767,” he said referring to the airline’s older models. If Boeing’s attempt to buy Embraer’s commercial division closes, the B737 MAX 8 order may be switched altogether to the E195 family, Milne said. The American and Brazilian manufacturers had hoped to close their tie-up early in 2020, but although the United States and China have approved the deal and Brazil is expected to this month, European Union merger watchdogs this week demanded more information from Boeing and Embraer, according to Bloomberg. A Boeing spokesman told Reuters that “Air Niugini is a valued Boeing customer and we are working closely with the airline to meet its evolving fleet requirements. Unfortunately, we do not disclose ongoing customer discussions and have no further comment.” As previously reported, other Boeing customers such as Norwegian Air International, Virgin Australia and, most recently, Malaysia Airlines, have also postponed the delivery of MAX jets since the model was grounded around the world in March 2019. Boeing confirmed on January 20 that it had temporarily halted production on the aircraft type. Earlier this month, Air Niugini said it was set to resume Dash 8-400 operations after an almost three-year hiatus, with two of the turboprops due to be delivered to the carrier shortly. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the carrier's current fleet includes one 21.3-year-old B737-700, one 16.2-year-old B737-800, two B767-300(ER)s averaging 24.3 years old, seven Fokker 100s (average age 27.2), and seven Fokker 70s (average age 23.9). Its subsidiary, Link PNG (Port Moresby), operates five Dash 8-300s and three Dash 8-200s, all of which have an average age of 23.9.

  12. a airlink já quer cair fora e voar por conta própria Airlink begins SAA uncoupling; Eswatini unit pursues own AOC 20.01.2020 - 11:58 UTC Airlink (South Africa) (4Z, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) has set about disentangling itself from bankrupt South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) following the replacement of its SAA franchise agreement with what it termed, "a new commercial arrangement". In a statement issued last week, privately-owned Airlink said that under the revised terms of its partnership with SAA, effective June 11, 2020, it will resume operating flights under its own "4Z" flightcode. Airlink abandoned the use of its own flightcode in favour of four-digit SA8xxx flight numbers in 1997 when it entered into a strategic alliance with SAA and South African Express (XZ, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo). The partnership gave Airlink access to SAA's reservations and ticketing system and by extension, implicit interline connectivity to any and all airlines with which SAA has an interline agreement. However, with SAA's future now uncertain given its entry into business rescue last year, Airlink has now set about becoming an independent carrier once more. "The change marks a new era in the long-standing commercial agreement with SAA," it said in a statement on January 16. "While SAA remains an important strategic pillar in Airlink’s strategy, the new arrangement gives Airlink the freedom to extend its commercial reach, develop more routes and frequencies on an independent basis and extend or establish additional agreements with other leading international airlines." The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows Airlink operates eight Jetstream 41s, seventeen E135s, eleven E140s, three E170s, and twelve E190s on a network that spans South Africa as well as Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, St Helena, Mozambique, Uganda, Madagascar, Lesotho, and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). In Eswatini, Airlink is a minority shareholder in Eswatini Airlink (formerly Swaziland Airlink), a regional carrier that operated its own aircraft under an Eswatini AOC from 1999 until September 2012. However, owing to the downgrading of the Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority (ESWACAA) in 2012, Eswatini Airlink has relied on its South African parent for the provision of air services in their entirety; it currently uses Airlink's AOC, aircraft, crew, traffic rights, and air services licence to carry out flights on its sole return route - Manzini Matsapha-Johannesburg O.R. Tambo. However, last week, Joseph Dlamini, the newly appointed General Manager of Eswatini Airlink, told the Swazi Observer newspaper that the airline was now in the process of resecuring its own AOC and operating licence from ESWACAA, a move that would allow it to resume inhouse flight operations. “We are currently involved in the registration and licensing process and once that process is done, they will know the exact time of launching the local operation of the flights. However, the process is unfortunately not being handled by ourselves as we are dependent on the regulator to issue the relevant licenses for us to be able to start our operations,” he said. Once completed, Dlamini hinted that Eswatini Airlink may expand beyond its Johannesburg route should market demand allow for it.

  17. Malaysia Airlines defers 2020 B737 MAX deliveries 17.01.2020 - 12:19 UTC Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) has suspended B737 MAX deliveries from Boeing, due to the delayed return to service of the aircraft type since it was grounded globally last year. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the Malaysian flag carrier had been expecting a total of fifteen B737-8s and ten B737-10s. The airline said that deliveries had been due to start in July with five to be delivered in 2020. “In view of the production stoppage and the delayed return to service of the 737 MAX, Malaysia Airlines has suspended the delivery of its orders which are due in 2020,” the carrier said in a statement without stating how long the suspension would be for. “As there is no clarity yet from various authorities on its return to service, our technical due diligence is still ongoing.” The move is another blow for Boeing, which on January 14 reported its worst annual net orders in decades and its lowest number of deliveries in 11 years, Reuters reported. It said it was sorry for the disruption the situation had caused Malaysia Airlines, assuring in a statement: “We are working to support them and all of our customers in every way possible to ensure complete confidence in the 737 MAX and a safe return to commercial flight.” The manufacturer has reported a net negative of 183 orders for 737 MAX aircraft including cancellations for last year, but it claimed that many of these were due to the collapse of a major customer, Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l). However, flyadeal (F3, Jeddah) has reversed a commitment to buy up to 50 of the jets, preferring an entirely Airbus fleet. Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has said it will cancel a 737 MAX order, though it remains on Boeing’s books, and Lion Air (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) warned it may axe tens of billions of dollars worth of orders, according to the Bloomberg news agency. Virgin Australia (VA, Brisbane Int'l) has said it will delay taking the first deliveries of 737 MAX aircraft by two years, and Norwegian Air International (D8, Dublin Int'l) has agreed with Boeing to postpone delivery of 14 of them originally due in 2020 and 2021.
  18. La Nacion and other Argentinian media reported that the coke were found on Tuesday at the Ezeiza international airport near Buenos Aires, shortly before flight MP 6912 would fly to Amsterdam via Ecuador. Customs received support from the campaign by more than fifty agents and five tracking dogs. The plane had previously flown via São Paulo in Brazil to Argentina. The Argentinian authorities are investigating whether the drugs were brought on board the aircraft in Argentina or Brazil. A KLM spokesperson confirms that Argentinian authorities are investigating a Martinair Cargo cargo operation. She said that she could make no further statements about it.
