A Itália é uma tragédia. Impressionante.

Italia Transporto Aereo (ITA)   A New Alitalia Is Born, and Its Name is Ita By Giacomo Robortaccio - October 10, 2020 MIAMI – After months of long negotiations, political deals, and tot

ITA will initially focus on mainly domestic and intra-European flights, along with a handful of long-range routes from Rome and Milan to New York, Boston, Miami and Tokyo.

"Broadly speaking, the plan should focus on long-haul routes, the most profitable particularly those to the US," says ITA chief executive officer Fabio Lazzerini.

"The long-haul market means privileging the North American market which is under-served and extremely profitable, but further expansion is needed."

"South America is to be kept on standby; we have to think about Asia and China, while Japan is doing very well."

The purchase of Alitalia assets after 7 September – Corriere.it

Italy Air Transport is preparing to spend at least 6.5 million euros per month just for the rental of the 52 aircraft currently used by Alitalia and which will be part of the initial fleet of the new national airline. Money that will partly end up in the coffers of the old airline – because it owns some of the aircraft – but also of international leasing companies. And that do not take into account any maintenance required. This is what emerges from the analysis that the Corriere della Sera carried out with some experts in the sector who specify that the calculations take into account the current market values of the jets and not any surcharges agreed between the parties.

The convening of trade unions

In the ITA industrial plan, take-off is scheduled for mid-October with 52 aircraft all hired and then gradually renewing the fleet with new generation aircraft from the end of 2022. On Monday 23 August the executive president of the newco Alfredo Altavilla called for Tuesday 25 August – at 10:30 – the transport category codes of Cgil, Cisl, Uil and Ugl, the Usb private work, Anpac and Anpav. He will have to discuss with them – as stated in the letter of which the Courier service obtained a copy – of the «acquisition by Italia Trasporti Aereo of the availability of some assets relating to the Aviation sector of Alitalia in extraordinary administration». ITA plans to complete the acquisition no earlier than September 7, it still reads.

Employees

The initial staff of ITA should consist of 2,800 employees: 1,550 of crew (pilots, flight attendants), about 1,250 of ground personnel. On these numbers – according to various trade union sources – there is a bit of discontent since at first evaluation, according to them, there seem to be too many employees among the ground staff. This too will be negotiated. The newco wants to apply the new national collective bargaining agreement for air transport to employees, but “on condition that this is renewed by 20 September with discontinuous content compared to the past and consistent with the needs of the industrial plan”. In any case – as Altavilla recalls in the letter – the industrial plan provides for an increase in the workforce “until reaching the total maximum number of about 5,750 employees in 2025 with exclusive reference to the personnel employed directly by ITA in its own employments”.

And velivoli

The letter also confirms the advances on the composition of the initial fleet. ITA will take the 52 planes from Alitalia. Seven will be Airbus A330s for intercontinental flights, 44 other Airbuses – 27 A320s and 17 A319s according to what is learned – for national and European connections. However, there is also an Embraer for short and medium-haul routes. The letter does not specify which model, but according to analysts consulted by the Courier service it should be the E190 – with a hundred seats -: an almost obligatory choice because it serves ITA to preside over a business market such as the one between Milan Linate and London City, in the United Kingdom: the technical restrictions imposed on the English runway make it impossible to use Airbuses .

Market values

But how much does it cost to rent these planes? The analysis takes into account current market values, but also seniority and hours of service. In the last eighteen months – experts explain – leasing costs have dropped by as much as 35% due to the coronavirus and the drop in demand. In any case, each Alitalia Airbus A330 can currently be hired for $ 200,000 per month (over € 170,000). Another 120 thousand euros – again per month – are needed for each A320, 111 thousand instead are what is needed to take each A319. For the only Embraer E190 the value is around 70 thousand euros per month. For a total of over 6.5 million euros of leasing per month. The value of the fleet, on the other hand, is € 665 million, but ITA has no intention of buying aircraft.

The renewal

From the end of 2022, the newco plans to start with the gradual renewal of the aircraft to rise – as anticipated by the company in July – to 78 aircraft, of which 13 for long range up to 105 in 2025. It will move towards a single manufacturer – from Airbus has an advantage for several weeks – but also in this case at least until 2025 the industrial plan envisages resorting to leasing, without having any owned jets, fishing through the “machines” made available to specialized companies. With a cost that, however, will be higher than that expected for 2022.

The negotiations

To date, it is not clear whether ITA will inherit Alitalia’s rental contracts (which are more expensive) or sign new ones. After all, the negotiations began very recently, as confirmed by a letter that the commissioners of Alitalia (Gabriele Fava, Giuseppe Leogrande and Daniele Santosuosso) sent to the unions on August 24: “On August 16, ITA formalized a non-binding proposal to Alitalia for the purchase of the assets of the Aviation sector – it is written in the document that the Courier service could read – consisting of 52 planes and other tangible assets, slots, intellectual property rights and contracts ». The “possible transfer”, the commissioners continue, is expected “in time to allow ATI to start the flight activities (it is a typo, meaning ITA, ed) starting from 15 October 2021 ».

Alitalia, brand on sale at the base price of 290 million.(euros)

17/09/2021 By Mary

There are 28 days to 15 October, the date scheduled for the start of Ita flights. The new company has not yet hired the staff, the initial 2,800 employees, due to the disagreements with the unions on the new employment contract and redundancies. Meanwhile, the commissioners of Alitalia have launched the tender for the sale of the brand of the old company. The tender to win the Alitalia brand will take place in two phases, with the possibility of raising the price. The basic price – reads the invitation – is 290 million euros, plus VAT and tax charges in accordance with the law. The Alitalia brand will be made available to the successful bidder by 31 December 2021.

The race for the brand

An announcement was published in the newspapers. “As part of the Alitalia Sai extraordinary administration procedure, the extraordinary commissioners intend to proceed with the sale of the” Alitalia “brand”, reads the short paid notice published by the triad commissioner (the notice is also published on the extraordinary administration website www.amministrazionestraordinariaalitaliasai.com). The announcement provides that from tomorrow, Saturday 18 September (at 12 noon Italian time) and by 30 September (until 24 hours), interested parties will be able to send requests for admission to the extraordinary commissioners. The data room will then be open on 20 September. The binding offers for the first phase by 4 October. Ita intends to participate in the tender, but other carriers may also participate.

l confrontation with trade unions

The negotiation with the unions on the contract resumed on September 14, after the table was interrupted on September 8, due to the differences between the requests of Ita and the expectations of the unions. The executive chairman, Alfredo Altavilla, has proposed salaries for the new company which, according to the unions, are about 38% lower than those of Alitalia. The pilots say the cut is 40%. The national secretary Fit-Cisl air transport, Monica Mascia, spoke to the Chamber of “an average reduction of 23% for all categories”, but other trade unionists specified that “23% is reached only if the 15% premium is collected for the positive results of the company ». The Ita plan foresees profits only from 2024, so this possibility would only be realized in four years, if the forecasts were respected.

The redundancy node

Another point of discord are redundancies and social safety nets. The unions say there is a risk of 7,700 redundancies, because Alitalia has 10,500 employees and departing Ita intends to hire only 2,800 employees, with 52 aircraft, less than half of Alitalia’s pre-Covid fleet. “The number of people cannot increase,” Altavilla said. If flights increase in 2022, there could be more hires. The unions ask for social safety nets for the entire duration of the plan, until 2025, with the cigs at least 80% of the effective salary. The government has not given answers, the Minister of Labor, Andrea Orlando, has not summoned the unions. For now there is only the request of the commissioners to extend the cigs, which expires on 22 September, by one year.

Two separate races for maintenance and handling

The maintenance and handling activities will be sold in two separate tenders. The prediction circulating among the unions is that the tenders can be made within this year. According to the final decision of the EU Commission, Ita will only be able to participate in a part of these activities. It may have the majority in the handling company and the minority in the maintenance. For the latter, a candidate is Gianni Lettieri’s Atitech.
