Eastern Airlines wants to Tango. The carrier filed with the US Department of Transportation on Wednesday to operate flights between Miami and Buenos Aires, using its Boeing 767 fleet. If approved the flights will operate twice weekly from 12 December through the IATA Winter season.

The carrier also applied for rights to fly from Miami to Santa Cruz, Bolivia. That service would also operate twice weekly, competing with Boliviana’s 6x weekly service.

The Buenos Aires and Santa Cruz flights will join Georgetown, Guyana (GEO) and Guayaquil, Ecuador (GYE) in regular service from Miami. Those destinations are also served once or twice weekly making it relatively easy to add a these destination with similar frequencies using the existing fleet.

As with the other markets it serves, Eastern promises “low fare competitive service” as part of its application.

Getting the EZE service off the ground will depend on Argentinian regulators as well. Commercial air travel remains shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The transport ministry hinted at a September restart and then an October option, but also wanted direct approval of every flight to be operated. Whether more regular service levels will be permitted by December remains to be seen.

Should the applications be approved – and there is no reason to believe they will not – the flights will also feature streaming movies and other entertainment content via the AirFi wireless IFE system.
